Probe against Muhyiddin aimed to cripple Bersatu - Azmin

The probe against Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin marks the beginning of attempts to cripple the party, Azmin Ali claimed today.

According to the Bersatu supreme council member, the party expects more similar actions to follow suit.

"We see this as the beginning of a series of actions to cripple the rise of the people," Azmin (above) told reporters when met outside the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya this morning. He had gone there to show support for Muhyiddin, who has been summoned for questioning.

Azmin said he was confident that the former prime minister is innocent.

"I am thankful that the rakyat and the Perikatan Nasional (PN) leadership for coming to show support today, as we are confident that Muhyiddin is not guilty of any charges.

"As members of a party that upholds accountability, transparency, integrity, rejects corruption and kleptocracy, we will stand with Muhyiddin," he said.

Muhyiddin yesterday confirmed via a statement on his Facebook page that he has been summoned for questioning at MACC at 11am today.

The Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson also denied news reports that he was arrested by the graft busters at a golf course yesterday. Instead, he was attending several meetings regarding the Bersatu annual delegates assembly which starts tomorrow, he clarified.

‘Probe to cover-up Umno issue’

Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man dubbed the action against Muhyiddin a way to cover up an issue Umno is currently facing.

"This selective probe is to cover up the 'huge issue' faced by Umno, pertaining to the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

"We are confident that Muhyiddin will emerge unscathed and that Allah will protect him," the Kubang Kerian MP told the media at the compound of the MACC HQ.

He was referring to the exemption granted by Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to Umno from provisions under the Societies Act 1966.

Party leaders charged

If charged, Muhyiddin will join the series of Bersatu leaders who have been charged since mid-February.

On Feb 21, former Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan was charged at the Kuala Lumpur High Court for soliciting bribes of an unspecified amount and slapped with another charge of receiving RM6.96 million in bribes in 2022.

Several charges were also laid against Segambut Bersatu deputy chief Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad.

According to the MACC, these charges were related to the Jana Wibawa scheme, a stimulus project by the then-Muhyiddin administration as part of the Covid-19 pandemic relief efforts.

Also charged was Teo Wee Cheng who runs a business in the Pagoh area, which is coincidentally Muhyiddin's stronghold.
